The Fun Mouse: Varieties: Satin

Satin

Satin

Symbol: sa
Chromosome: 13
Inheritance: Recessive

Description: All parts of the hair itself are thinner than normal, yet not very noticeable to the naked eye at all. Satins can show all other coat types as well (Satin Angora, Satin Rex, Satin Fuzzy, etc).

You can usually tell a baby mouse is satin when the fur comes in as it will have a very noticeable sheen (more so than a normal, healthy shine all babies should have). Satin is much harder to see on dark colors, especially black. Often times you can only tell if a black mouse is satin by looking at the belly shine.

Breeding: Because satin is recessive, you need both parents to carry satin or be satin themselves in order to get satins in a litter.

Breeding inheritance
    Satin sa/sa x Satin sa/sa =
    • 100% Satin sa/sa.
    Satin sa/sa x Standard carrying Satin Sa/sa =
    • 50% Satin sa/sa
    • 50% Standard carrying Satin Sa/sa
Standard carrying Satin Sa/sa x Standard carrying Satin Sa/sa =
    • 25% Satin sa/sa
    • 50% Standard carrying Satin Sa/sa
    • 25% Standard (not carrying for satin) Sa/Sa
Problems: Satins have been linked to an immune disorder which makes it harder for them to fight off viruses and tumors. This does not mean that satin mice *are* going to catch viruses and get tumors. It means that they are more susceptible to such things. If not exposed (including hereditary) to these things, the animal will not have such problems.
