The Fun Mouse: Varieties: Rex
RexSymbol: ReChromosome: 11 Inheritance: Dominant Description: You can tell if a mouse is going to be rex when the whiskers come in at or slightly after birth. Whiskers will be curly or crimped. When the fur grows in, it will have a noticeable wave. As a rex mouse ages, the fur will straighten out a little to a lot. There are 3 visual stages to the rex coat. As youth the coat is very curly. As young adults the coat straightens out to the point that the fur usually stands on end. As adults, some rex mice have a nice, soft wave to the coat while others only have slightly waved guard hairs. Well bred rex mice will keep their wavy coat thru life. Click here to see the 3 stages of the rex coat. Homozygous Rex Re/Re tend to have better curl. Rex can show all other coat types as well (Satin Rex, Angora Rex (Texel), Frizzy Rex (tho this is harder to notice in appearance), etc). Breeding: Because Rex is Dominant, you can get Rex babies by breeding only one Rex parent to anything. Mice that have Rex in their background, yet are not Rex themselves, will not have Rex babies. Homozygous Rex (having both Re alleles) tend to have better curl. In addition, combining Frizzy with Rex also tends to give better curl. In my experience, combining Frizzy and Rex makes younger mice have spiral-like curls and holds curl better with age. Breeding inheritance
