The Fun Mouse: Varieties: Long Hair
 |
Long Hair
Symbol: lgh
Chromosome: 8
Inheritance: Recessive
Description: Long Hair mice have long guard hairs which start to show around weaning age (4-5 weeks). It often gets significantly shorter with age. The guard hairs are exceptionally long. Unlike angoras, Long Hair mice have a normal length undercoat. They lack the zigzag hairs in the under coat that Angoras have. This makes them look and feel less "wooly" as well. Their head, feet, and tail have a Standard coat appearance. Long Hair can show all other coat types as well (Long Hair Satin, Long Hair Rex (making Texel), Long Hair Fuzzy, etc).
Breeding: Because Long Hair is recessive, you need both parents to carry Long Hair or be Long Hair themselves in order to get more Long Hair in a litter.
Breeding inheritance
Long Hair lgh/lgh x Long Hair lgh/lgh =
Long Hair lgh/lgh x Standard carrying Long Hair Lgh/lgh =
- 50% Long Hair lgh/lgh
- 50% Standard carrying Long Hair Lgh/lgh
Standard carrying Long Hair Lgh/lgh x Standard carrying Long Hair Lgh/lgh =
- 25% Long Hair lgh/lgh
- 50% Standard carrying Long Hair Lgh/lgh
- 25% Standard (not carrying for Long Hair) Lgh/Lgh
Problems: Skin lesions in association with Homozygous Long Hair (lgh/lgh) mice have been reported by labs. |
